I’ll just cut straight to the chase! We are opening our doors to the Cairn Creek Cabin and our brand new “barndominium-style” Bed & Breakfast this coming Fall. If you’ve been following us for a while you may remember we had a “5-year Plan” for this project. So much has changed for us in just a few short months I can’t really do justice writing about it all here. Suffice to say, when you throw together a few significant life changes, an off-market offer on our house in Kansas, and a global pandemic well, you get OPPORTUNITY!!!

The Barndominium

So we jumped in with both feet, at a very scary and awkward time that we won’t soon forget, and began our barndo build in late March. Due to stay-at-home orders, I stayed in Kansas while Brian spent 5 1/2 weeks in Arkansas overseeing all the boring parts of building a home like site clearing, septic system plans and permits, and foundation work.

We returned mid-May for Brian to wire the house (he’s an electrician!) while I got to do all the fun parts of building a home like finalizing window and door plans and choosing flooring, cabinetry and countertops, paint, and hardware. Our “down time” was spent working on the bath house at the tiny off-grid cabin, which is coming along very nicely.

At this point, the house is all dried and ready for insulation. By next week we’ll be ready for windows and sheetrock which is so exciting since that’s the state at which a house really begins to take shape. We’ll return mid-July for electrical trim out and other details and then the BIG MOVE!!!

I have a vision for the B&B – a modern cottage vibe. Light, bright, and airy. With natural elements, pops of color, and texture. We’ve never made an interstate move! When I think about moving furniture and boxes across 3 states so many items become unimportant to me. As I clean out, organize, pack, and stage items for moving I am paring down to what we really love, need, and can accommodate in our new space. This vision is guiding me in my decisions about what to keep and what goes! I can’t wait to share it with you!

In other exciting news, we received confirmation from the county health department that we will be able to serve our guests breakfast with their stay  We can also sell and/or serve homemade baked goods, jams, jellies, etc. I am so grateful we met these requirements! It was important to me to be able to accommodate the needs and preferences of a variety of guests. And, I just love to cook and share good food! Now to work on a menu…

A Bit of FUN!

We did make room for fun on our trip. We scheduled a guided fishing trip on Lake Ouachita with Scott Willis of Xtreme Strike Guide Service, something we have both always wanted to do. It should be noted that I caught the biggest fish and Brian caught the most fish.

Our 26th wedding anniversary was spent exploring our new home town, driving through the mountains, and hanging out with friends and family. A highlight was experiencing the amazing hospitality of Tiffany’s Bed and Breakfast in Bismark, Arkansas. We connected with Bob and Tiffany on social media, taking note of their impressive Inn and 20+ years of experience in the hospitality and B&B game. They were kind enough to spend their morning giving us the grand tour; talking with us about birds, business, and books; and sharing their incredible signature coffee blend.

In closing, we appreciate you following along on this crazy journey of ours and invite you to sign up for our newsletter so you don’t miss progress pics and our grand opening information.

‘Til next time,

Jennifer
